MAC addresses consist of 48 bits. [12 set of 4 bits]

MAC address OUI
There is provision for the first 24 bits to be a UOI (Unique Organisation Identifier) which identifies the manufacturer of the interface controller and hardware.
The remaining 24 bits identify the device
